The KIV-7M is the multifunction crypto device used to protect UHF data. It sits in the data path between the radio and the network, taking outgoing plaintext from the radio, encrypting it for transmission, and taking incoming ciphertext from the radio, decrypting it for use. This paired encrypt/decrypt capability is what keeps UHF communications confidential. The KIV-7A is an older variant, while the KIV-8M and KIV-19 are different crypto devices with other roles, so they aren’t the unit assigned to handle all UHF data encryption and decryption in this context.
